AROUND NIL THIS WEEK | DEC 23, 2024

Updated: Feb 28

Dec 22, 2024—The NCAA has updated its Q&A document on the House, Hubbard, and Carter settlements, adding 24 clarifications to its October release. The $2.7 billion settlement, set for final approval in April 2025, will implement significant changes, including annual revenue sharing of $20-23 million to athletes. Schools can opt in or out of the agreement yearly, starting in 2025, but must comply with terms to rejoin. Roster limits will vary by sport, with compliance deadlines tied to championship qualifications, while all D1 scholarships transition to equivalency awards, allowing partial distribution across rosters. Additionally, NIL deals exceeding $600 will face Deloitte's fair-market-value review. The final hearing is scheduled for April 7, 2025. MORE

Dec 23, 2024—Travis Hunter, Colorado's two-way star and 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, isn't just making headlines on the field—he’s also making a difference off it. After signing lucrative NIL deals with major brands like adidas, United Airlines, and 7-Eleven, Hunter has become one of the university's biggest NIL donors. Remarkably, he personally funds NIL payouts for 10-15 teammates despite not taking money from Colorado’s collective 5430 Alliance himself.

Hunter is set to play in the Alamo Bowl against BYU, saying he owes it to Coach Prime and his team. MORE

Dec 23, 2024—In a heartwarming holiday gesture, Marquette's scholarship basketball players pooled their NIL earnings to surprise the team’s six walk-ons with $1,000 each. Senior guard Stevie Mitchell announced the thoughtful Christmas gift during a team holiday party, leaving walk-ons like Cam Brown feeling deeply appreciated.

While walk-ons often miss out on NIL benefits and still juggle school costs, this act highlighted the strong camaraderie within the team. “It’s a special feeling when you know they care about you that much,” said Brown. Head coach Shaka Smart's emphasis on relationships continues to shine through. MORE
