The NCAA Division I Cabinet approved a significant change to college golf's transfer portal windows on April 15, effective immediately.
The spring transfer window has been reduced from 30 days to 15, opening the day after the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Golf Championships conclude. The fall December 1-15 window remains.
According to the Men's and Women's Golf Oversight Committees, the change is designed to keep transfer activity out of postseason play. NCAA data shows that most athletes who plan to transfer enter the portal quickly, making the 30-day window, which took effect in 2023, longer than necessary. Critics argue that the shorter window gives players less time to weigh their options.

The announcement also finalized penalties for ghost transfers across all Division I sports. Programs that sign, roster, or allow a transfer student-athlete to participate in athletically related activities before that athlete has officially entered the transfer portal will face automatic penalties: a suspension of the head coach for 50% of the season and a fine equal to 20% of the sport's budget.
The ghost transfer rules were first adopted by the Cabinet on March 31. The April 15 update finalized the enforcement process.
